Pumps, valves and heat exchangers for data center cooling

Hydraulic components for cloud, colocation, AI, HPC and mining data centers: chillers, free cooling, facility water systems, CDUs, immersion cooling and heat recovery. KSB and Ebara pumps with VFDs, balancing valves, plate heat exchangers. Technical selection, stock available, worldwide shipping.

Why data centers need more pumps

Cloud, artificial intelligence, high performance computing and mining keep pushing up power per rack. A latest-generation AI server rack dissipates around 130 kW. Air cooling in practice handles 20-40 kW per rack: above that threshold heat has to be removed with water. Every new AI hall adds hydraulic loops, redundant pumps, heat exchangers and valves.

Italy expects EUR 25 billion of data center investment in 2026-2028, with 83 new projects and 75% of capacity concentrated in the Milan area (Data Center Observatory, Politecnico di Milano, July 2026). Over the same period the liquid cooling component supply chain is working with long lead times.

Roffia supplies the hydraulic package wherever the site is: pumps, valves, heat exchangers, fittings and accessories from a single supplier, with technical selection and stock for urgent site requirements.

Every type of data center

Size and density vary, but the hydraulics are the same: water or glycol to circulate, heat to reject, uptime to guarantee.

The three loops of a liquid-cooled data center

Heat travels from the racks to the outside through three water loops in series, separated by heat exchangers. Each loop has its own pumps and valves.

Frequently asked questions

Which pumps are used to cool a data center?
It depends on the loop. On the heat rejection loop (chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers) large-capacity end-suction or split case pumps are used. On the facility water system single or twin vertical inline pumps are used. On the technology cooling system serving the racks the pump sits inside the CDU and is usually stainless steel. In every case the pumps run on variable frequency drives with N+1 or 2N redundancy. Roffia selects and supplies KSB and Ebara pumps: see data center cooling pumps.
Why do AI data centers use liquid cooling?
A latest-generation AI server rack (e.g. NVIDIA GB300 NVL72) dissipates around 130 kW, while air cooling in practice handles 20-40 kW per rack. Above that threshold heat has to be removed with water: cold plates on the processors, CDUs and dedicated hydraulic loops. Every MW of AI white space therefore needs more pumps, heat exchangers and valves than a conventional data center.
What is a CDU and does Roffia supply them?
A CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) separates the facility water system from the loop that feeds the racks. It contains a plate heat exchanger, redundant pumps, strainers, control valves and sensors. Roffia does not build CDUs; we supply components to the companies that do: pumps, plate heat exchangers, control valves, strainers and instrumentation.
Which valves are used in data center cooling systems?
Wafer or lug butterfly valves with electric actuators for isolation on large diameters; pressure independent control valves (PICV) to distribute flow between CRAHs, rear door heat exchangers and CDUs; 2-way and 3-way control valves; dual plate check valves on pump discharges; stainless steel ball valves for branch connections; automatic air vents.
Does Roffia export data center components outside Italy?
Yes. Roffia ships worldwide: Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas and Asia. We work with contractors, chiller and CDU manufacturers, distributors and traders abroad. Quotations are issued in English and French, EXW/FCA Cremona or delivered on request, with full documentation (datasheets, curves, CE declarations, EN 10204 3.1 certificates where applicable).
How quickly can Roffia deliver pumps and valves to a data center site?
Stock items (valves, fittings, expansion joints, spare parts, standard pumps) ship within a few days to any country. For large pumps or special configurations the quotation states the delivery date confirmed by the manufacturer. Liquid cooling components are in short supply: for fast-track projects, send us your enquiry as early as possible, even with partial data.
What information do you need for a quotation?
Component type and quantities, current make and model or acceptable alternatives, pump duty point (flow in m³/h and head in m), fluid and temperature (water or glycol, percentage), motor rating and VFD, materials and connections (PN or ANSI), destination country, required delivery date and documents needed. Use the RFQ template.
