What are industrial ball valves?

Ball valves are quarter-turn rotary valves in which a drilled spherical plug (the "ball") controls flow by rotating 90° between the fully open and fully closed positions. When open, the bore of the ball aligns with the pipe bore, providing a straight, unobstructed flow path. When closed, the solid part of the ball blocks the flow completely, delivering a bubble-tight shut-off (Class VI leakage to EN 12266-1 or ANSI/FCI 70-2).

Ball valves are the most widely used industrial valve type for isolation and block-and-bleed duty because of their speed of operation (quarter turn = 1/4 of a revolution), low pressure drop, compact dimensions and long service life. They are available in sizes from DN 6 (¼") to DN 300 (12") and beyond in special orders, with pressure ratings from PN 6 to PN 100 (ANSI Class 150 to 2500).

Main applications of ball valves

Utility and HVAC systems

Brass and stainless steel ball valves are the standard isolation valve for hot and cold water distribution, HVAC circuits, compressed air, inert gases and low-pressure steam. Their quarter-turn operation makes them ideal for quick manual isolation; motorised (electric or pneumatic) actuated versions are used for remote operation and building management systems (BMS).

Steam and condensate systems

Stainless steel and carbon steel ball valves are used extensively in steam distribution systems for isolation duties at boiler headers, heat exchanger inlets and branch lines. Full-bore design is preferred to facilitate system pigging and minimise pressure loss in long steam mains.

Oil & Gas and biogas

Fire-safe, ATEX-certified ball valves in carbon or duplex stainless steel are required in oil & gas process lines, LPG storage facilities and biogas plants. API 6D and API 607 certification ensures suitability for safety-critical isolation duty. Trunnion-mounted designs are preferred for larger sizes (DN 100+) to reduce operating torque and ensure consistent sealing under high pressure differentials.

Chemical and pharmaceutical industry

The chemical and pharmaceutical sector requires ball valves in AISI 316L stainless steel with PTFE seats and packing for aggressive media. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between full-bore and reduced-bore ball valves?
A full-bore ball valve (also called full-port) has a ball with an opening equal to the pipe's internal diameter, resulting in virtually zero pressure drop and unobstructed flow — critical for applications where pigging, smooth flow or viscous fluids are involved. A reduced-bore ball valve (two-thirds or standard-port) has a smaller opening (typically 60–70% of the pipe bore), which introduces some pressure drop but allows for a more compact, lighter and less expensive valve body. For most utility applications (water, air, low-pressure steam) reduced-bore is acceptable. For oil & gas pipelines, condensate systems and chemical process lines, full-bore is generally specified.
Which ball valve materials are suitable for steam service?
Steam applications require careful material selection. For saturated steam up to 16 bar and 200 °C, ball valves in stainless steel AISI 316 with graphite or PTFE packing and metal seats are the standard choice. For high-pressure steam (above 25 bar), carbon steel A216 WCB or forged steel A105 bodies with hard-faced ball and metal seats (typically stellite 6) are mandatory. Brass ball valves are only suitable for steam at low pressures (PN 6–10) and must never be used on superheated steam lines. What does "fire-safe" mean for a ball valve, and when is it required?
A fire-safe ball valve is designed and tested to ensure that if the primary soft seat is destroyed by fire, a secondary metal-to-metal seat takes over to maintain acceptable leakage control, preventing a catastrophic release of flammable or toxic media into the fire. Fire-safe valves are tested according to API 607 (quarter-turn valves) or API 6FA. They are mandatory in oil & gas installations (refineries, terminals, offshore platforms), petrochemical plants, LPG storage and any application where the fluid is flammable and the consequences of a full leak in fire conditions are unacceptable. What is an ATEX-rated ball valve and when is it needed?
ATEX (from European Directive 2014/34/EU) designates equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres — areas where flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts may be present. An ATEX-rated ball valve features anti-static earthing devices that bleed off static charges generated by fluid flow, preventing sparks. ATEX ball valves are required in biogas plants, solvent handling, hydrogen systems, LPG/LNG facilities, flour mills and any zone classified as Zone 0, 1, 2 (gas) or Zone 20, 21, 22 (dust). How do I size a ball valve for my application?
Ball valve sizing involves several steps. First, determine the nominal diameter (DN) based on the pipe size. Never automatically size the valve equal to the pipe — consider the required flow coefficient Kv (or Cv in US units), which relates flow rate to pressure drop. Second, select the correct pressure rating (PN): PN 6, 10, 16, 25, 40 or ANSI Class 150–2500 depending on your maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) with appropriate safety margin. Third, confirm the temperature rating matches your operating and peak temperatures. Finally, specify the end connection: threaded (BSP or NPT), flanged (EN 1092-1 or ANSI B16.5), butt-weld or socket-weld.
