Chemical & Pharmaceutical sector

Corrosion-resistant components for handling aggressive chemicals, solvents and sterile fluids. PVC, PP, PVDF and stainless steel solutions conforming to GMP and FDA requirements.

When standard materials are not enough

The chemical and pharmaceutical industry handles acids, bases, solvents and ultra-pure fluids that attack conventional metallic components. Roffia supplies specialised valves, fittings and piping in engineering plastics (PVC-U, PP-H, PVDF) and high-grade stainless steels for these demanding applications.

Plastic valves and piping

Ball, butterfly and diaphragm valves in PVC-U, PP-H and PVDF. Fittings and pipes with solvent cement, fusion and flanged joints. FIP brand. Temperature up to 140°C (PVDF).

Stainless steel components

AISI 316L valves, fittings and piping for pharmaceutical clean rooms and sterile processes. Electropolished surfaces, full material traceability, 3.1 certificates.

Safety equipment

Safety and relief valves for overpressure protection. Emergency shut-off valves. Chemical-resistant pressure gauges with diaphragm seals. ATEX-certified actuators.

Pumps for chemicals

Centrifugal pumps in stainless steel and special alloys (Hastelloy, titanium) for aggressive and corrosive fluids. Magnetic drive pumps for zero-leakage applications.

Clean steam traps

In pharmaceutical and biotech plants, clean steam is used to sterilise fermenters, freeze-dryers, autoclaves and WFI distribution loops. Steam traps serving these circuits must guarantee zero contamination, complete condensate drainage, and compliance with ASME BPE, EN 285 and cGMP standards.

Construction features

  • • Body and internals in AISI 316L stainless steel
  • • Surface finish Ra ≤ 0.8 µm (electropolishing optional)
  • Tri-Clamp, orbital weld or compression connections
  • • Self-draining design — no condensate pooling
  • • PTFE or FDA-certified EPDM gaskets

Available types

  • Thermostatic capsule — for low condensate loads, compact and reliable
  • Thermodynamic (stainless steel) — for high-pressure saturated steam lines
  • Free-float — for high capacities, continuous condensate discharge
  • Sterile drain sets — trap + sample valve + filter in a pre-assembled unit

Why a dedicated clean steam trap?

A conventional carbon steel trap would contaminate the circuit with iron oxides and metallic particles, compromising steam quality and invalidating GMP validation. Clean steam traps in 316L with sanitary finish ensure the discharged condensate maintains the same purity standards as the incoming steam. Roffia distributes Spirax Sarco clean steam solutions, with technical support from our Cremona headquarters.

Domande frequenti

Which valves are suitable for chemically aggressive fluids?
For acids, bases and solvents the main choices are: diaphragm valves in PVC-U, PP-H or PVDF (no contact between fluid and metal parts), ball valves in stainless steel with PTFE seats for moderately aggressive fluids, and membrane valves for fluids with suspended solids. The FIP brand is the reference for plastic components in the chemical sector.
What does ATEX certification mean for valves?
ATEX certification (EU Directive 2014/34/EU) ensures the component is safe for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (gas, vapours, dust). For valves, it is mainly relevant for electric actuators and associated instrumentation. Classified zones (Zone 0, 1, 2 for gas; Zone 20, 21, 22 for dust) determine the required protection level.
Does Roffia supply components for pharmaceutical cleanrooms?
Roffia supplies components for process lines upstream and downstream of cleanrooms: 316L stainless steel valves with sanitary finish, clean steam distribution systems for sterilisation, and GMP-compliant components. For cleanroom utilities (WFI purified water, pure steam) we offer diaphragm valves and certified instrumentation.
What are clean steam traps and why are they needed in pharmaceuticals?
Clean steam traps are devices made from AISI 316L stainless steel with a sanitary finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm) designed to drain condensate from pure steam circuits without contaminating the system. Unlike conventional carbon steel traps, they release no iron oxides or metallic particles. They are mandatory in plants conforming to ASME BPE, EN 285 and cGMP. Roffia distributes dedicated clean steam solutions by Spirax Sarco.
Which connections are used for clean steam traps?
The most common connections are: Tri-Clamp (the most widely used in pharma for easy disassembly and cleaning), orbital welding (for permanent, fully sealed installations) and stainless steel compression fittings. All connections must have a smooth internal finish and 3.1 material certification. The clean steam traps stocked by Roffia are available for all these connection types.
