The right pump for each loop

A liquid-cooled data center has several loops in series: heat rejection, facility water and the technology cooling system serving the racks (see the full diagram on the data center sector page). Each loop uses pumps of a different type and size, always with VFDs and always with a standby.

We select the pump with official KSB and Ebara software on the actual duty point, including the effect of glycol on viscosity and absorbed power, and propose the matching drive.

Data center pump types, application loop and available series
Pump type Where it is used Series Why
Vertical inline, single or twin Facility water system, secondary distribution KSB Etaline Small footprint, mounted directly in the pipework. A twin pump provides redundancy in a single casing.
End-suction to EN 733 Chiller, condenser and free cooling loops KSB Etanorm, Ebara Baseplate-mounted, easy back pull-out maintenance, wide choice of impellers.
Close-coupled Secondary loops, air handling units, heat recovery KSB Etabloc, Ebara Motor and pump on a common shaft: compact, fewer alignment issues.
Split case (axially split) Primary loop on large campuses, condenser water KSB, on selection High flows at high efficiency; inspection without removing the pipework.
Vertical multistage, stainless steel Pressure boosting, make-up water, water treatment, reverse osmosis KSB Movitec, Ebara EVMS / EVMSG High heads in a small footprint, stainless steel hydraulics.
Fire pump sets Data center sprinkler and hydrant systems KSB, Ebara UNI EN 12845 compliant, with electric and diesel drivers.

Availability and lead time for each series confirmed in the quotation.

Redundancy

N+1 with single pumps in parallel, 2N with separate lines, or twin inline pumps with a changeover valve. Check and isolation valves on every pump allow maintenance without shutting down the loop.

Efficiency

High-efficiency motors (up to IE5 with KSB SuPremE) and VFDs with differential pressure control. Absorbed power falls with the cube of speed: the most direct lever on the plant's PUE.

Fluid and materials

Cast iron for chiller and facility water loops, stainless steel for water treatment and loops serving the CDUs. Mechanical seals and elastomers compatible with glycol mixtures (PG25).

Frequently asked questions

Which pumps are used in data centers?
Cooling loops mainly use vertical inline pumps (single or twin) for facility water distribution, EN 733 end-suction and split case pumps for chiller and cooling tower loops, and stainless steel multistage pumps for pressure boosting and water treatment. All run on variable frequency drives with redundancy. Inside the CDUs, on the rack side, compact stainless steel pumps are integrated by the unit manufacturer.
What do N+1 and 2N redundancy mean for pumps?
N+1 means installing one more pump than required: with three duty pumps, a fourth standby pump starts if one fails. 2N means duplicating the entire system, with two independent lines. Twin inline pumps combine two pumps in one casing with a changeover flap valve. The choice depends on the availability level of the data center (Tier) and on the designer's specification.
Why do data center pumps run on VFDs?
The heat load of a data center varies with rack occupancy and with the seasons. A variable frequency drive matches pump speed to the required flow, keeping differential pressure in the loop constant. The power drawn by a centrifugal pump falls with the cube of speed: at reduced speed the savings are substantial and have a direct effect on PUE. Roffia selects pump and drive together (KSB PumpDrive, Danfoss VLT).
Can the pumps handle glycol mixtures?
Yes, subject to the usual checks. Propylene glycol (e.g. PG25) increases viscosity and density: it shifts the duty point and the absorbed power, so the pump must be selected on the actual fluid. Mechanical seals and elastomers (typically EPDM) must also be compatible. On the loop serving the racks, stainless steel materials are used to avoid contamination.
Does Roffia supply KSB and Ebara data center pumps for export?
Yes. Roffia is an authorised KSB dealer and Ebara distributor, shipping worldwide. We serve contractors, chiller and CDU manufacturers, distributors and traders. Quotations list stock items and items to order separately, with the delivery date confirmed by the manufacturer.
Do you supply spare parts for pumps already installed in the data center?
Yes: original KSB and Ebara impellers, mechanical seals, bearings and maintenance kits. For the most common models we hold stock and ship to any country. For discontinued pumps we identify the current equivalent with the same installation dimensions.
