Hydrogen safety relief valves

PED category III and IV, certified anti-embrittlement materials, ANSI B16.5 and EN 1092-1 connections. For H2 compression stations, blending, refining, ammonia, biomethane upgrading and fuel cells. Ribel brand, free technical sizing.

Hydrogen risk and the role of the safety valve

Hydrogen is the process fluid most complex to handle safely: it forms explosive mixtures with air over a very wide range (4–75% v/v), penetrates metal lattices causing embrittlement, has low ignition energy (0.02 mJ vs methane's 0.28 mJ) and diffuses rapidly upon release. The safety valve is the last barrier against overpressure: if control systems fail, it must open within fractions of a second to discharge the gas to atmosphere or to the blow-down system, before pressure reaches catastrophic values.

For H2 service, a generic safety valve is not sufficient. Materials specifically qualified for hydrogen compatibility (316/316L austenitic steels, nickel-base alloys), seat leakage classes capable of containing H2 molecules (the smallest in the periodic table), PED category III or IV certification for Group 1 fluids, and complete dossier for INAIL audits and statutory inspections are required.

Roffia distributes Ribel safety valves in Italy in dedicated configurations for hydrogen service, with free engineering sizing and complete technical documentation supply.

Hydrogen-compatible materials

Material selection is the most critical step in H2 valve design. The hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon can cause sudden brittle fracture of apparently intact components. The table below summarizes recommended and to-be-avoided materials based on ISO 11114-1, ISO 11114-4 and ANSI/CGA G-5.6 criteria.

Material H2 suitability Application range
AISI 316 / 316LRecommendedStandard for H2 up to ~100 bar, T from −196 to +400 °C. Stable austenitic structure
AISI 304 / 304LAcceptable with limitsSensitive to cold martensitic transformation — prefer 316L

Hydrogen sector — complete overview

Domande frequenti

Which safety relief valves are suitable for hydrogen service?
Hydrogen service requires safety valves designed and certified for hazardous gases per PED 2014/68/EU. Hydrogen is classified as a Group 1 fluid (hazardous fluids) due to its extreme flammability, so valves typically fall in category III or IV depending on pressure and DN. Essential features are: body and internals in materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement (AISI 316/316L, Inconel 625, Hastelloy C276), metal-to-metal or pure PTFE seats, smooth internal finishes to avoid gas retention, certified-tightness connections. Valves must comply with EN ISO 4126 (sizing and performance) and, for specific H2 applications, with ISO 11114-1/-4 (material/gas compatibility) and ISO 19880 for hydrogen stations.
What does PED category IV mean applied to hydrogen?
PED category IV is the highest risk level of directive 2014/68/EU: it applies when the pressure × volume (PS·V) or pressure × diameter (PS·DN) product exceeds certain thresholds for Group 1 fluids, which include hydrogen. Specifically, a category IV H2 safety valve must be: certified by a Notified Body (module H1, B+D, B+F or G), supplied with CE marking + NB number, accompanied by an EU declaration of conformity, technical dossier, material MTRs with lot traceability, individual test certificates (pressure test, set pressure, tightness). For plants subject to Italian D.Lgs. 81/08 and INAIL inspections, PED category IV documentation is the mandatory baseline for commissioning. Roffia supplies exclusively certified valves with complete dossier, retained for the equipment lifecycle.
What is hydrogen embrittlement and which materials avoid it?
Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) is a phenomenon where H2 atoms penetrate the crystal lattice of certain metals — particularly carbon steels, low-alloy and high-strength steels — causing loss of ductility, cracking and sudden brittle fracture, even at pressures lower than design. The phenomenon is aggravated by high pressures, extreme temperatures and residual stresses. To avoid it, materials with low hydrogen absorption and favorable crystal structure are selected: austenitic stainless steels AISI 316L (recommended up to ~100 bar), Inconel 625 and Inconel 718 (for high pressures and temperatures), Hastelloy C276, Monel 400. To be avoided for high-pressure H2: untreated carbon steels, martensitic steels, high-hardness alloys (>22 HRC). Guidelines are codified in ISO 11114-1 and ISO 11114-4 (metal/gas compatibility) and ANSI/CGA G-5.6 for hydrogen piping.
Are Ribel safety valves certified for hydrogen service?
Yes. Ribel (Italian group specialized in industrial valves, technical site ribelvalvole.it) manufactures PED category III and IV safety valves with materials and configurations specific for H2 service: AISI 316L or Inconel body on request, internals with metal-to-metal or pure PTFE seats, individual certification for each valve, CE marking with Notified Body number. Ribel valves cover set pressures from 1 to 250 bar, DN from 15 to 200, threaded ANSI/BSP, flanged ANSI B16.5 class 150/300/600/900/1500 or EN 1092-1 connections. Roffia is Ribel distributor for Northern Italy and supplies valves with free sizing, complete PED dossier and fast lead times (Cremona warehouse for standard configurations).
How is a hydrogen safety valve sized?
Sizing follows EN ISO 4126-1 for gases adapted to hydrogen-specific properties (molar mass 2.016 g/mol, Cp/Cv ratio ≈ 1.41, compressibility factor Z pressure-dependent). The technical steps are: (1) Identification of the worst-case overpressure scenario (upstream regulator failure, external fire with isobaric accumulation, operator error). (2) Calculation of required release mass flow rate in kg/h. (3) Definition of set pressure (at or below MAWP), back pressure on the discharge header, release temperature. (4) Calculation of effective discharge area A [mm²] with the ISO 4126-1 gas formula using H2-specific values. (5) Selection of valve with standard orifice ≥ calculated A (ISO/API letters: D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, T). (6) Verification of maximum back pressure tolerated and opening times. The Roffia technical team performs the calculation free of charge: just provide process data (design P, MAWP, T, discharge scenario) and we propose model, set pressure and PED dossier.
Do H2 safety valves require ATEX certification?
Hydrogen forms explosive mixtures with air across a very wide range (4–75% v/v), so environments where releases can occur are classified as hazardous areas Zone 0, 1 or 2 per ATEX directive 2014/34/EU (equipment) and ATEX 1999/92/EC (workplaces). Safety valves, being purely mechanical components without active ignition sources, generally do not require ATEX marking per se — ignition risk assessment applies to the complete system. However, associated accessories (limit switches, position sensors, electric actuators for motorized valves) must be ATEX certified appropriate for the zone (II 2G Ex for Zone 1, II 3G Ex for Zone 2). Roffia supplies, on request, valves with complete ATEX accessories for H2 compression stations, hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) per ISO 19880-1, and H2-methane blending plants in gas networks.
Which connection to choose: threaded, flanged ANSI or flanged EN?
The choice depends on pressure, nominal diameter and project standard: (1) Threaded BSP/NPT: only for small DN (15–50) and medium pressures, not recommended above 40 bar in H2 service because thread sealing is less reliable than flanged. (2) Flanged ANSI B16.5 class 150/300/600/900/1500/2500: standard for Oil & Gas, refining and chemical projects of North American background. Class 600 and above with RTJ (Ring Type Joint) gaskets are common for high-pressure H2. (3) Flanged EN 1092-1 PN 16/25/40/63/100: European standard, common in Italian and Central European plants, with flat spiral wound or RTJ gaskets depending on PN. For high-pressure H2 plants (>40 bar) Roffia recommends ANSI Class 600+ flanges with Klinger RTJ gaskets for maximum sealing safety — see our pages on RTJ ring-type-joint flanges and Klinger hydrogen gaskets.
