ANSI ball valves for hydrogen service

Ball valves are the standard for on/off shutoff in hydrogen lines: reliable sealing, quick operation (90°), low pressure drop, simple maintenance. H2 service however requires dedicated configurations: seats qualified for class A leakage (very small H2 molecules), body in anti-embrittlement materials, certified anti-static device (hydrogen has minimum ignition energy 0.02 mJ — any electrostatic spark can ignite combustion), and fire-safe construction for ATEX environments.

Standard hydrogen plant configurations use ANSI B16.5 flanged connections: Class 150 and 300 for low/medium pressure (blending, upgrading), Class 600 with RTJ gaskets for high pressures, Class 900–1500–2500 for compressed storage and HRS at 350 and 700 bar. Valves are PED category III certified (or IV in the most severe configurations) and supplied with complete technical dossier.

Roffia distributes Ribel H2 ball valves in Italy: forged split body or top entry construction, trunnion-mounted ball, pure PTFE / PEEK / metal-to-metal seats, anti-static as standard, fire-safe API 607.

Domande frequenti

Which ball valves are suitable for high-pressure hydrogen service?
For high-pressure H2, trunnion-mounted ball valves are used with split body or top entry construction, fire-safe seats in pure PTFE, PEEK or metal-to-metal, certified anti-static device and ISO 11114-qualified materials. Standard configurations use AISI 316L body, F316L forged or Inconel 625 for high pressures, 316L coated or solid Inconel ball, anti-blowout stem. PED category III certification is required for H2 (Group 1) above the directive's PS·DN thresholds. Ribel hydrogen ball valves cover DN 15–300, ANSI Class 150–1500, with full PED dossier and MTR 3.1/3.2. Pure PTFE seats are recommended up to ~200 °C, metal-to-metal seats for cryogenic or high-temperature applications.
What does PED category III mean for an H2 ball valve?
Category III of the PED 2014/68/EU directive applies to valves on piping with Group 1 fluids (hydrogen included) when the PS·DN product exceeds the threshold values in table 7 of the directive. In category III the valve requires: design per a harmonized standard or equivalent, verification and CE marking by a Notified Body, conformity assessment module (B+D, B+F, G or H1), EU declaration of conformity with NB number, material MTRs, individual hydrostatic test certificate (≥ 1.5 × PS), seat tightness test and body tightness test. For ANSI Class 600 or higher trunnion ball valves in high-pressure H2 service, category IV may apply in the most severe configurations — Roffia indicates the appropriate category and dossier based on design data.
Which ANSI classes are recommended for hydrogen?
The choice of ANSI B16.34 class depends on operating pressure and temperature: Class 150 (PN ~20 bar at ambient T) for low-pressure H2, blending in natural gas networks, biomethane upgrading. Class 300 (PN ~50 bar) for chemical and medium-pressure refining. Class 600 (PN ~100 bar) standard for many industrial H2 applications — this is where RTJ gaskets become common. Class 900 (PN ~150 bar) and Class 1500 (PN ~250 bar) for H2 storage, compression and HRS (Hydrogen Refueling Stations) at 350 bar. Class 2500 (PN ~420 bar) for HRS 700 bar service and special applications. Effective rating must always be derated based on temperature per ASME B16.5 table, also considering the body material.
Pure PTFE or metal-to-metal seats for hydrogen ball valves?
Seat selection is critical for H2 service tightness: Pure (virgin) PTFE guarantees soft sealing leakage class A or AA per ISO 5208, optimal up to ~200 °C and ANSI classes up to 600. It is the standard choice for H2 plants at ambient temperature. Filled PTFE (glass, carbon, MoS2) extends life in cyclic service but may slightly reduce tightness — acceptable for industrial applications. PEEK operates up to 260 °C, wear-resistant, recommended for frequent cycling and blowdown valves. Metal-to-metal seats (stellite 6, chromium carbides, tungsten carbide) are mandatory for: cryogenic temperatures (liquid H2 at −253 °C), high temperatures (>260 °C), fire-safe API 607/608 service in classified zones. Metal-to-metal sealing is leakage class IV or V per ISO 5208 — less tight than PTFE but indestructible in fire. Ribel valves are available in all configurations with traceable material MTRs.
Is fire-safe certification required for H2 ball valves?
Yes, in any hydrogen installation classified as a hazardous ATEX area (Zone 0, 1 or 2) ball valves must be fire-safe certified per API 607 (eighth edition, soft seated) or API 6FA/ISO 10497 (heavy-duty valves). The fire-safe test verifies that, after exposure to external flame at 750 °C for 30 minutes, the valve maintains: internal tightness within acceptable limits (maximum allowable leakage), external tightness to atmosphere, operability (must be closeable after the fire). Fire-safe construction includes: secondary metal-to-metal seats activated after PTFE damage, graphite stem packing, anti-static device between ball, stem and body. All Ribel H2 ball valves are fire-safe API 607 with individual test certificate; on request we also supply API 6FA valves for severe Oil & Gas service with H2S co-presence.
Anti-static sealing: what does the standard require for H2 valves?
Hydrogen has a minimum ignition energy of just 0.02 mJ — the lowest of any industrial gas. An electrostatic spark generated by friction between ball, stem and body during operation can ignite combustion. Therefore H2 valves require an anti-static device certified per BS 5146-1 and ISO 7121: a series of springs and contacts in stainless steel or nickel-base alloys that ensure electrical continuity between ball, stem and body, with measured resistance < 10 Ω. The body itself must be earthed to the plant. All Ribel valves for hazardous gas service are anti-static as standard with individual continuity test documented on the test certificate.
Does Roffia offer free sizing for H2 ball valves?
Yes, the Roffia technical service performs free of charge: size and ANSI class selection based on flow rate, pressure, temperature and allowable pressure drop, material selection per ISO 11114 and ANSI/CGA G-5.6, seat definition (PTFE/PEEK/metal-to-metal) based on service, actuator sizing pneumatic or electric if required, compliance verification with applicable standards (PED, ATEX, ISO 19880 for HRS).
