Energy efficiency in industrial plants

Energy costs represent a major portion of operating expenses in industrial plants. Steam and heating systems offer significant savings opportunities through relatively simple component upgrades and maintenance practices.
Condensate recovery
Returning hot condensate to the boiler feedwater tank saves both water treatment costs and the energy needed to reheat the feedwater. A condensate return system with properly functioning steam traps can recover up to 25% of the total steam energy.
Steam trap maintenance
Failed steam traps waste steam directly. A regular trap survey and maintenance programme typically saves 5-10% of total steam costs with a payback period of just a few months.
Pipe insulation
Uninsulated steam and condensate pipes radiate significant energy to the surroundings. Insulating bare pipes, valves and fittings is one of the simplest and most cost-effective energy-saving measures.
Efficient heat exchangers
Properly sized heat exchangers with correct control valves ensure steam energy is transferred efficiently to the process. Fouled or oversized exchangers waste energy through poor control.
Variable speed drives
Fitting VFDs to pumps and fans allows speed adjustment to match actual demand. Energy savings of 20-50% are common compared to throttle or bypass control.
