Steam trap maintenance: a practical guide

A faulty steam trap is invisible money draining from your plant. Regular testing and maintenance is one of the highest-ROI investments in any steam system.
Why it matters
Industry studies show 15-25% of installed traps are malfunctioning at any time. A single failed-open trap on a 10 bar line wastes over 25 kg/h of live steam — that is €8,000-12,000/year in wasted fuel. A comprehensive trap survey typically identifies savings of 5-10% of total steam costs.
Testing methods
Temperature measurement — An infrared thermometer or contact probe upstream and downstream of the trap. A healthy trap shows a clear temperature drop. Same temperature both sides may indicate failed-open.
Ultrasonic testing — The most reliable method. An ultrasonic detector picks up the high-frequency sound of steam passing through the trap. Trained operators can distinguish healthy operation from blow-through or blocked conditions.
Visual inspection — Check for leaks, corrosion, missing insulation and incorrect installation. Ensure strainers upstream are clean.
Recommended schedule
- Monthly: visual walk-around of critical traps
- Quarterly: ultrasonic survey of all traps
- Annually: full audit with report and replacement recommendations
