Heat exchangers: supply and technical sizing

Selection, sizing and supply of plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers for industrial plants. Free technical consultation for correct sizing based on your process data. Roffia srl, Cremona — Lombardy, Italy.

Plate heat exchangers

Compact, highly efficient and easy to maintain. Corrugated stainless steel plates create turbulent flow for maximum heat transfer in minimal space. Gasketed (dismantlable) and brazed versions.

  • 3-5x higher heat transfer coefficient than shell & tube
  • Up to 80% less floor space
  • Expandable by adding plates
  • Easy to clean and inspect (gasketed version)

Applications: process heating/cooling, DHW production, pasteurisation, district heating, biogas digester heating.

Shell and tube heat exchangers

The most robust and versatile. A tube bundle enclosed in a cylindrical shell. Suitable for extreme pressures, temperatures and aggressive or viscous fluids where plate exchangers cannot be used.

  • Withstands extreme pressure and temperature
  • Handles viscous, dirty or solids-laden fluids
  • Long service life in severe conditions
  • Special materials available (titanium, Hastelloy, duplex)

Applications: steam condensation, thermal oil heating, high-pressure chemical processes, refineries, CHP flue gas recovery.

Data needed for sizing

Send us these details and we'll size the optimal exchanger. If you don't have all the values, we'll help you identify them:

  • Primary fluid: type, flow rate, inlet/outlet temperatures
  • Secondary fluid: type, flow rate, inlet/outlet temperatures
  • Thermal duty required (kW)
  • Operating pressures primary and secondary side
  • Allowable pressure drop
  • Application: new plant or revamping

Typical applications: how we work

DHW production from steam

Context: Food company, domestic hot water production from steam boiler.

Solution: AISI 316 stainless steel plate exchanger + control valve + steam trap.

Roffia's role: Complete thermal node sizing, food-grade material selection, integrated system supply.

Biogas digester heating

Context: 1 MW biogas plant, digestate heating with CHP hot water.

Solution: AISI 316L plate exchanger resistant to digestate + temperature control.

Roffia's role: Thermal data analysis, sizing, exchanger and valve supply.

Boiler room revamping

Context: Replacing obsolete shell-and-tube with plate exchanger to improve efficiency.

Solution: Gasketed plate exchanger, 70% footprint reduction, 25% efficiency increase.

Roffia's role: Existing condition survey, resizing, improvement proposal, complete supply.

Chemical process cooling

Context: Reactor cooling with cooling tower water, aggressive fluid.

Solution: Titanium shell-and-tube exchanger, resistant to chemical corrosion.

Roffia's role: Compatible material selection, sizing, operating pressure verification.

Domande frequenti

What is the difference between plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers?
Plate heat exchangers are compact, highly efficient and easy to disassemble for cleaning — ideal for applications requiring frequent maintenance. Shell-and-tube exchangers withstand higher pressures and temperatures and are the standard in Oil & Gas and petrochemical. For heating systems and food processing, plate exchangers are almost always the best choice.
How to size a heat exchanger?
You need: thermal duty (kW), inlet and outlet temperatures for both fluids, flow rates, fluid types (water, steam, oil, glycol...) and allowable pressure drops. Roffia technical team performs sizing using manufacturer software. Contact us with your process data.
Does Roffia supply heat exchangers in Europe?
Yes. Roffia srl based in Cremona, Italy supplies plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers throughout Italy and Europe. We also provide technical support for sizing, selection and spare parts (plate gaskets, tubes). Fast service especially in Northern Italy.
What types of heat exchangers does Roffia supply?
Roffia supplies: gasketed plate heat exchangers (removable plates for easy maintenance), brazed plate heat exchangers (compact, high pressure, for HVAC and refrigeration), shell and tube heat exchangers (for Oil & Gas and high-temperature processes). We also supply replacement gaskets and revamping services for existing heat exchangers from any manufacturer.
What applications use heat exchangers?
Main applications: heating and cooling in central plants (water-to-water, steam-to-water), domestic hot water production (instantaneous or with storage), district heating building substations, heat recovery from industrial processes, pasteurisation in the food sector, oil cooling in hydraulic systems and compressors, condensation and evaporation in refrigeration plants.
