How piston valves work

Piston valves (also known as pressure-assisted valves or flow-actuated valves) are linear valves in which the fluid pressure acts on the plug in the same direction as the closing force. When the valve is closed, the differential pressure between upstream and downstream pushes the plug against its seat, creating a self-reinforcing metal-to-metal seal: the higher the pressure, the tighter the closure.

This principle makes piston valves ideal for high-pressure steam, superheated water and hot process fluids, where a perfect seal is essential even after thousands of operating cycles. Opening requires overcoming the pressure force, but once open the valve provides a straight flow path with moderate pressure drop.

High-pressure steam lines

Piston valves are the optimal choice for main isolation on steam headers and branch lines at 25–60 bar. The pressure-assisted seal ensures zero leakage even after years of service, reducing energy waste and operating costs. Also ideal as bypass around control valves: when the bypass is closed, system steam pressure maintains a perfect seal.

Power plants and cogeneration

In thermal power plants and cogeneration facilities, piston valves are used on turbine extraction lines, steam distribution headers and superheated water circuits. Robust construction and simple mechanics guarantee long-term reliability with minimal maintenance.

Chemical and petrochemical industry

What is the difference between a piston valve and a check valve?
A piston valve (also called pressure-assisted valve or flow-actuated valve) uses the fluid pressure itself to generate additional seating force: the higher the downstream pressure or differential pressure, the tighter the seal. This behaviour is opposite to a check valve, which opens with flow and closes by gravity or spring when flow reverses. The piston valve is designed to close tightly on external command (lever, actuator) while the flow itself reinforces the seal, making it also an isolation valve. Check valves, on the other hand, are unidirectional and automatic — they do not allow manual shut-off.
When should piston valves be used instead of ball or gate valves?
Piston valves are preferred when perfect sealing at high pressures is required with low operating effort. In high-pressure steam systems, for example, closing a gate valve or ball valve against 40–60 bar requires significant force. A piston valve uses the same system pressure to push the plug onto its seat, reducing manual effort and ensuring metal-to-metal bubble-tight seal even after many operating cycles. They are also ideal for services with suspended solid particles (dirty steam, flash condensate) because the plug movement scrapes the seat clean on each cycle. What materials are available for piston valves?
For standard services up to PN 40 / 200 °C, piston valves are available in ductile iron GGG40 or carbon steel A216 WCB. For high-temperature steam and petrochemical plants, forged steel A105, stainless steel A351 CF8M and special alloys (Inconel, Monel) are used. Seats and plugs are typically stellite-faced (Stellite 6) to ensure surface hardness, erosion resistance and long-lasting metal-to-metal sealing. How do I size a piston valve for steam service?
Sizing depends on the nominal diameter (equal to or slightly smaller than the pipe), the design pressure and the operating temperature. For isolation duties on main steam lines, the DN matches the pipe to minimise pressure drop. For bypass and relief applications, a smaller DN may be selected by calculating the required Kv. Do piston valves require special maintenance?
Piston valves have simple mechanics with few wear parts. Main maintenance consists of periodic tightness checks (visual test for passing leaks with valve closed), stem lubrication and packing inspection. After many cycles or in erosive media, seat and plug re-lapping may be necessary. Roffia supplies spare kits (packing, gaskets, plug/seat) and can carry out workshop overhauls. Recommended intervals: annual inspection, full overhaul every 5–10 years depending on service.
