Food-grade stainless steel fittings

AISI 316L stainless steel fittings for the food & beverage, dairy, wine, brewing and pharmaceutical sectors. DIN 11851 swaged and welded, Clamp/Tri-Clamp and Garolla couplings. EHEDG compliant, EU Regulation 1935/2004.

Hygienic components for food-contact piping systems

In food, wine and pharmaceutical plants, fittings are not just pipe connectors — they are critical hygiene points. Smooth surfaces, no dead legs, easy CIP cleaning and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable requirements. Roffia supplies sanitary fittings in AISI 316L with Ra ≤ 0.8 µm finish in the main coupling types used across Italy and Europe.

Materials and finishes

Base material

AISI 316L stainless steel (1.4404) — molybdenum-alloyed low-carbon stainless steel, resistant to chloride and organic acid corrosion. Compliant with EU Regulation 1935/2004 for food contact materials.

Surface finish

Satin or mirror-polished finish with internal surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 µm on food-contact surfaces. Compliant with EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) hygienic design guidelines.

Gaskets

Available in EPDM (general food use), silicone (high temperature), PTFE (chemical, pharmaceutical), FKM/Viton (oils, solvents). All certified for food contact to FDA/EC 1935/2004.

Available sizes: DN 10 to DN 150 (depending on fitting type).

DIN 11851 — swaged

DIN 11851 swaged fittings require mechanical expansion (swaging) of the tube into the fitting socket. The joint is robust and permanent, ideal for fixed lines transporting milk, beverages, juices and viscous products. Available as elbows, tees, reducers, couplings and caps.

Advantages

  • Permanent, high-integrity joint
  • No on-site welding required
  • Can be dismantled with specific tooling
  • Cost-effective and fast to install

Typical applications

  • Milk transport lines in dairies
  • Beverage bottling systems
  • Viscous product transfer (honey, syrups)
  • Wineries — wine transport lines

DIN 11851 — welded

DIN 11851 welded fittings have weld-end extensions: the tube is orbitally TIG-welded for a perfectly hygienic, crevice-free joint with no dead legs. The weld seam can be passivated and inspected by borescope.

Advantages

  • Fully hygienic joint with no dead legs
  • Suitable for CIP and SIP systems
  • Passivatable and inspectable weld
  • Mandatory for sterile product lines

Typical applications

  • CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems
  • Sterile lines (pharma, nutraceutical)
  • Dairy SIP systems
  • Cosmetic and pharmaceutical production

Clamp / Tri-Clamp — DIN 32676 / ISO 2852

The Clamp (or Tri-Clamp) is a quick-release clamp connection conforming to DIN 32676 / ISO 2852. A three-segment (or two-segment) clamp compresses an interchangeable gasket between two ferrules. Tool-free disassembly and reassembly in seconds.

Advantages

  • Ultra-fast tool-free disassembly
  • Gasket easily inspected and replaced
  • Smooth bore, no dead legs
  • Ideal for frequent cleaning/inspection points

Typical applications

  • Sampling and inspection ports
  • Instrument connections (probes, sensors)
  • Sections requiring frequent opening
  • Breweries, wineries, pharma plants

Garolla

The Garolla is a typically Italian threaded flanged coupling, widely used in traditional Italian dairy and food plants. The tube is swaged (flanged) and secured with a nut and gasket. Economical and reliable, very common in Po Valley dairies and Italian wineries.

Advantages

  • Cost-effective and widely available
  • Simple installation and disassembly
  • Very common in Italy (easy spare parts)
  • Suitable for low to medium pressures

Typical applications

  • Dairies and milk processing plants
  • Wineries — traditional lines
  • Craft breweries
  • Food plants with low CIP intensity

Domande frequenti

What standards apply to food-grade stainless steel fittings?
The main standards for food-grade stainless steel fittings are: DIN 11851 (dairy coupling, swaged and welded versions), DIN 32676 / ISO 2852 (Clamp/Tri-Clamp), SMS 3008 (Scandinavian standard, similar to DIN), and the Italian Garolla coupling. All manufactured in AISI 316L with surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 µm and compliant with EU Regulation 1935/2004 for food contact.
What is the difference between DIN swaged and DIN welded fittings?
DIN 11851 swaged fittings require mechanical expansion (swaging) of the tube inside the fitting socket: the joint is robust and permanent, ideal for fixed lines transporting milk, beverages and viscous products. DIN 11851 welded fittings have weld-end extensions: the tube is orbitally TIG-welded for a perfectly hygienic, dead-leg-free joint. These are mandatory for CIP systems, sterile lines and pharmaceutical processes.
What is a Clamp (Tri-Clamp) fitting?
The Clamp (or Tri-Clamp) is a quick-release clamp connection conforming to DIN 32676 / ISO 2852. A three-segment (or two-segment) clamp compresses an interchangeable gasket between two ferrules. Tool-free disassembly and reassembly in seconds. Ideal for sampling points, instrument connections and sections requiring frequent cleaning or inspection.
What is a Garolla fitting?
The Garolla is a typically Italian threaded flanged coupling, widely used in traditional Italian dairy and food industry plants. The tube is swaged (flanged) and secured with a nut and gasket. It is an economical and reliable system for plants with low CIP intensity, very common in Po Valley dairies and Italian wineries.
What does Ra ≤ 0.8 µm mean and why does it matter?
Surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 µm is the threshold recommended by EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) for food-contact surfaces. A smoother surface reduces attachment points for bacteria and organic residues, facilitates CIP cleaning and lowers contamination risk. Roffia supplies AISI 316L fittings with certified satin or mirror-polished finish meeting Ra ≤ 0.8 µm.
Does Roffia deliver food-grade fittings internationally?
Yes. From our Cremona warehouse we deliver throughout Italy and internationally (EU and export since 2015). Particularly fast delivery (24-48 hours) across Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont and Veneto — the main dairy, wine and food production regions of Northern Italy.
