Valves for the food industry: regulations and materials

The food and beverage industry demands components that meet strict hygiene standards. Every valve in contact with the product must be made from food-grade materials with smooth, cleanable surfaces.
Material requirements
AISI 316L is the standard for product-contact surfaces. Its low carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion after welding. For non-contact parts (actuators, brackets), AISI 304 is acceptable.
Surface finish matters: a roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8 µm is typical for product-contact surfaces. Electropolished finishes (Ra ≤ 0.4 µm) are required for pharmaceutical-grade applications.
Valve types for food processing
Ball valves with cavity-free design prevent product retention. Butterfly valves with EPDM or silicone liners are ideal for large-bore isolation. Diaphragm valves offer zero dead-leg design for sterile applications.
Connections
Tri-clamp (DIN 32676) is the standard hygienic connection — easy to disassemble and clean. DIN 11851 (dairy coupling) is common in the dairy and beverage sector. Flanged and threaded connections are used for utilities (steam, water) not in product contact.
Certification
Look for EC 1935/2004 (materials in contact with food), FDA 21 CFR 177 for elastomers, and 3-A Sanitary Standards where applicable. Full material traceability with 3.1 certificates is essential.
